The greening of pitched roof surfaces is considered the supreme discipline for green roofs. Inclined green roofs require special attention right from the planning phase. Roof pitch, roof construction, roof structure, statics and the necessary shear protection measures must be adapted to the desired vegetation pattern. Thanks to our expertise as market leader, the Optigrün pitched roof offers customers the greatest possible planning security.

From a roof pitch of 10°, shear protection systems are generally used, from 15° we recommend the use of shear protection systems in combination with pre-cultivated Sedum Vegetation Mats.

Pitched roof greening is subject to greater surface runoff of precipitation water. Runoff in the substrate and drainage layer is also faster. The roof pitch means that the angle of solar radiation is steeper, which leads to increased evaporation, especially on south-facing roofs. Therefore, green roofs on sloping roofs require additional irrigation much more quickly than flat roofs during dry periods. The requirement must be checked on a case-by-case basis. The use of automatic irrigation is recommended for roofs with a slope of approx. 25° or more, especially if manual emergency irrigation cannot be guaranteed during the growth phase and dry periods.

Due to the often limited load reserves on pitched roofs, especially on wooden roof constructions, most pitched roof greening systems are designed as thin-layer extensive green roofs. Together with the Extensive Substrate E, the Optigrün shear protection systems for the greening of pitched roofs form a stable and easily rootable layer for the vegetation. The pre-cultivated Vegetation Mats serve as surface erosion protection and allow the vegetation to establish quickly.

Simply intensive pitched roof greening requires greater load reserves and is therefore mainly implemented as concrete roof constructions.

Intensive forms of green roofs require more maintenance. Special precautions must therefore be taken to prevent falls (Safety).
